Our story begins in 1993 when Tim and I moved from the city to a rural 24 acre property in North Carolina. We settled in with exisiting pets and built a barn to house the growing population of Arabian and Paint horses. Horse shows became our week-end entertainment.
When I went to work at the Petsmart clinic, I met my first Maine Coon, Tubby-the clinic’s official greeter- and promptly fell in love with him and the breed. After Tim decided it was more cost efficient for me to stay home (all my paycheck went to more pet ‘stuff’ it seemed!) I began a search for a Maine Coon just like Tubby. I went to cat shows, I read cat magazines, I talked to many Maine Coon breeders, and after two years of searching, a kitten came along that was just what I wanted.
Taylor Made 4 a Fox (aka Rascal) our wonderfully goofy boy came from Pat Taylor, who has a well known and very well regarded cattery - Makanacoon Cattery- located in Virginia Beach, Va.
We became great friends with Pat, and when the opportunity came to own one of her females, we jumped at the chance and into a new type of show arena.
Alopeke Cattery was established in 2003 with Willow,
and Myst came to us in 2004. We wanted to continue Pat’s Hawaiian theme (‘Makana’ is Hawaiian for gift) in our cattery name as our personal “thank you” to Pat, and that’s how Alopeke(Ah-lo-pay-kay) came about..it’s
the Hawaiian word for Fox.
We are a very small Maine Coon cattery- breeding just two or three litters a year- so we don’t always have kittens available. Our kittens are wonderful examples of the Maine
Coon breed: great boning, large size, beautiful thick coats, amazing personalities, very healthy and certainly worth waiting for.
